NEC show

by Mark Rowe

From uniforms and body-worn cameras to patrol cars, floodlighting and mobile printers, this year’s Emergency Services Show brings kit and services together for two days at the NEC in Birmingham. On 24 and 25 September, the free-to-attend exhibition is aimed at all ranks of police officers and control room staff, who are invited to attend to familiarise themselves with the latest equipment.

Among the 450 exhibitors are training providers including the College of Policing, the Tactical Training Centre (the nationally approved College of Policing firearms training facility), Training 4 Resilience, Emergency Planning College, Fire Service College, Blue Lamp Afloat, Emergency Response Driver Training, Amputees in Action, Babcock International and Serco. Police force visitors can also take part in the free College of Paramedics workshops which are CPD accredited.

A road traffic incident will be simulated in the outdoor area where visitors can also meet the Highways Agency and view the latest from Yamaha which include the FJR1300 pro specification motorcycle and the Dorset Police VX Patrol ProWC, kitted out with Bluetooth comms, GPS navigation and LED strobe.

Over 80 emergency services-related voluntary sector partners and NGOs will be available in the Emergency Response Zone. Stands of interest to police visitors include British Association for Women in Policing, Police National Search Centre, Metropolitan Police Service, National Association of Chaplains to the Police, British Association for Public Safety Communication Officials, Emergency Planning Society, National Ballistics Intelligence Service, National Academy of Crime Scene Cleaners, The Prince’s Trust and AA Special Operations Response Team.

Many stands will feature the latest communications from rugged laptops to smartphone apps for secure group messaging. Panasonic Toughbook for example is showcasing a number of devices including the Toughpad FZ-G1 which is being piloted by Hertfordshire Police and the Home Office ESMCP will be updating visitors on a new national mobile communication service for all three emergency services. Other emergency services technologies on display will include: radios, command and control systems, vehicle systems, satellite communications, maps and navigations systems, wireless technology and recording equipment such as body-worn cameras.

The latest search and rescue techniques will be showcased in the UK SAR Zone. New for 2014, this feature brings together The RNLI, Maritime and Coastguard Agency, RAF Mountain Rescue, British Cave Rescue Council, Mountain Rescue England & Wales and the Association of Lowland Search & Rescue.

The NEC is physically linked to Birmingham International Station and Birmingham Airport and is accessible from UK motorways. Parking for visitors and exhibitors is free, and coaches will run from Birmingham International Station to the exhibition halls.
