Multipoint locks, door foils robbers

by Mark Rowe

An armed robbery in Birmingham was foiled when the criminals were trapped as they tried to escape from a jewellery shop. The incident, caught on CCTV and featured in the BBC TV show ‘Caught Red Handed’, showed the attack-resistant qualities of Pickersgill-Kaye’s multipoint locks and the two interlocking doors made by Warrior Doors Ltd, the security firms said after.

When the silent alarm was triggered by the owner, the store filled with a thick vapour making visibility impossible. One robber found the button to open the internal door to the exit, but when his accomplice got through the door and it shut, they found themselves in the airlock area between the two doors. Pickersgill-Kaye says that its HS170 three-point lock for access control systems has an automatic deadlocking function with a 25mm bolt throw and high security cylinder guard.

Despite repeated attacks on the doors and locks, which had been mortised in to provide a visually appealing look for the retailer, the two robbers were unable to force their way out before armed police arrived. The outside door was so secure, the police had to call the fire brigade, but even with all the heavy equipment at the disposal of the 999 services it took time to prise the door open so that the police could arrest the two men. Warrior Doors managing director, Brett Barratt, said: “We’ve sourced our locks for high security entrances from Pickersgill-Kaye for several years, because we’ve found them to be consistently reliable in the quality of products they supply and the service they provide. The design and strength of their locks complements Warriors high security door designs and performance standards perfectly. We always use them for high value retail and critical national infrastructure projects.”

Available in surface mounted and mortise versions, Pickersgill-Kaye’s multi and single point locks are designed and made entirely in the UK. The firm adds that the range of locks, bolts and fittings has been developed to meet standards of physical attack but maintain safe and easy exit. The products are tested to European BS EN standards for panic and emergency exit as well as undergoing independent blast testing, cycle testing in excess of one million cycles and being fire tested, to BS EN standards, as part of a secure doorset.

Pickersgill-Kaye’s locks are designed on CAD software and are subjected to testing on key operation, lock construction and overall durability and resistance to attack, to satisfy the operational requirements of national and international market sectors. Approvals include certification to LPS 1175 Issue 7 Levels SR3 and SR4 and government standards.
