Fencing for sports centre

by Mark Rowe

A £6 million sports complex built on a former hospital site in Caerphilly has opened with sports and perimeter fencing and handrails from Zaun. The Wolverhampton-based fence manufacturer supplied sports and security fencing contractors AlphaFence with more than one kilometre of fencing and handrails. They installed over 600 metres of 5m high fencing, some with 1.5m sheet steel panels at the bottom and some with an extra 3m of netting on top, plus more than 400m of spectator railings.

The former Ystrad Mynach Hospital site was turned into a sports hub. The complex is now the home training centre of the local rugby team the Dragons and boasts artificial and grass pitches for football and rugby, floodlights and stands.

Caerphilly councillor Dave Poole said at the opening: “I am looking forward to seeing local teams and emerging talent rubbing shoulders with the professional rugby and football players of Newport Gwent Dragons and Cardiff City FC.”

And Dragons chief executive Dr Chris Brown added: “We are delighted to have this state of the art facility available to our region. It means for the first time, we have a 3G pitch available exclusively for ourselves to train on plus the gym and medical facilities. This will make a big difference, particularly in the depths of winter.”
