ONVIF Plugfest

by Mark Rowe

ONVIF, the US-based standardization initiative for IP-based physical security products, ran its eighth ‘Developers’ Plugfest’ in early March at an event that drew 28 ONVIF member companies that have used the ONVIF specifications in their IP-based physical security products.

The gathering, at the Move Hotel in Mogliano Veneto, Italy, featured 60 engineers who gathered to test the inter-operability of their latest Profile S implementations for CCTV. The event also was an chance for members to examine interoperability among products designated as Profile G for recording features and Profile C, which applies to access control features. In all, the three-day event saw more than 430 hours of product assessment.

Canon’s Takahiro Iwasaki, Chairman of ONVIF’s Technical Services Committee Taskforce, Developers‘ Plugfest, said: “From a practical standpoint, there’s no better way to verify products’ interoperability using ONVIF specifications than when manufacturers from around the world gather for this bi-annual event. As ONVIF prepares to roll out Profiles G and C, and continues its work on Profile S, this timely technical gathering helps ensure that devices will be ready.”

For the first time, the plugfest also saw User Scenario Testing, which let a client — connected with multiple devices such as a video management system, NVR and/or IP camera — verify its ONVIF interoperability based on end-user scenarios. In addition, there was the traditional peer-to-peer testing to verify device interoperability among others supporting the same Profile.

The next ONVIF Developers’ Plugfest is scheduled for North America in September.

As of March 2013, ONVIF membership had grown to more than 440 companies with in excess of 2,900 conformant products available to the market. For more information about ONVIF conformant products, including vendors and the conformant models, visit ONVIF’s website: www.onvif.org.
