Imaging for a sixth sense

by Mark Rowe

The thermal imaging product company FLIR Systems offers cameras and related products.

Typical applications include situational awareness, and security, whether airborne and ground-based surveillance, condition monitoring, navigation, recreation, research and development, manufacturing process control, search and rescue, drug interdiction, transport, border and maritime patrol, environmental monitoring, and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosives threat detection. Last summer the company brought out the FLIR ONE thermal imaging accessory for smartphones. It turns an iPhone 5 or 5s into a thermal imager. When paired with its iPhone app, the product displays live infrared imagery that allows the user to see the world from a thermal perspective. The product detects invisible heat energy, giving users the ability to ‘see’ and measure minute variances in temperature. Uses for consumers include detecting energy leaks at home and seeing in complete darkness. Andy Teich, President and CEO of FLIR Systems, says: “FLIR is dedicated to developing and delivering technologies that provide users with a sixth sense,” said . “Based on technology that was formerly reserved for the military, FLIR ONE is the first in a new generation of affordable thermal imaging devices designed to inspire imaginative and innovative uses by consumers.” Uses include:
l At home: Identify heat loss, energy inefficiency, and water leaks;
l Outdoors: Watch wildlife day or night, survey a campsite, find a lost pet;
l Security and safety: See at night, detect intruders, and see through light fog and smoke; and
l Creativity: Observe abstract patterns and create artistic images.

The makers add that the product detects a range of temperatures and has a spot temperature measurement display. Users can capture photos or videos and share them via text, email, or social media through the FLIR ONE app, available in the Apple App Store. Other apps include:

n FLIR ONE TimeLapse: Turns a series of thermal images into a time-lapse video, showing changes in temperature through time;
n FLIR ONE Paint: Share photos that selectively display color and thermal elements; and
n FLIR ONE Panorama: Turns a series of imagery into a single panoramic image.
Weighing 3.9 ounces, FLIR ONE was the company adds designed to emulate the form factor of the iPhone for a sleek presentation. It houses its own rechargeable battery for up to two hours of continuous use.
