Aspirating smoke detectors

by Mark Rowe

Honeywell, the smoke and fire detection product firm, has announced the next generation of Xtralis VESDA aspirating smoke detectors for early warning smoke detection.

The parent company Honeywell says that its Xtralis VESDA-E VEP offers improved detection performance – 1.5 times greater sensitivity than VESDA VLP, and up to six times better dust rejection to minimise nuisance alarms, saving building owners the makers say potential costs from fire department calls. The manufacturer says that the new product offers higher detection stability over a wider range of environments and improved consistency through its ‘Flair Detection’. Its new particle characterization capability provides analytics for targeted detection and response.

VESDA-E VEP uses auto configuration to aid commissioning, an intuitive 3.5-inch LCD touch screen display for status investigation and wireless remote review with the iVESDA app for maintenance. New standard features include built-in Ethernet and Wi-Fi for connectivity with commonly used handheld devices; and the PC-based Xtralis VSM monitoring package.

The series occupies the same mounting footprint, pipe, conduit and electrical connector positioning as VESDA VLP, for a retrofit option. The new system enables longer pipe runs for detector mounting, helping to reduce maintenance costs. Detector coverage is extended by up to 20 per cent the firm says in high-ceiling sites, which also helps reduce costs. The VESDA-E VEP also can work with VESDAnet installations, allowing monitoring of both VESDA-E and legacy detectors via the latest iVESDA application.
