Outdoor-ready 360 degree network camera

by Mark Rowe

New from Axis Communications, the network video product company, is AXIS Q6000-E. It’s described as an outdoor-ready 360 degree network camera that integrates with the AXIS Q60-E Series of PTZ domes. With a single click, operators can optically zoom in on details of interest while at the same time being able to maintain an overview of areas of up to 20.000m² (215,000 sq ft), about the size of four football fields. This makes the Q6000-E suitable the makers say for city monitoring applications such as public squares and car parks, shopping malls and other open areas.

Erik Frännlid, Director of Product Management, Axis Communications, says: “The AXIS Q6000-E addresses the need for a simple way to monitor a wide area and, simultaneously, be able to optical zoom in on details . The seamless integration with AXIS Q60-E Series of outdoor PTZ cameras provides a smart, innovative and space-efficient solution offering new and unique video surveillance possibilities.”

A single click on any object in Q6000-E, using the one-click PTZ control feature, will trigger the Q60-E allowing operators to optically zoom in on the specific object of interest. The use of two screens gives a 360 degree overview from AXIS Q6000-E, and a zoomed-in view from Q60-E, providing operators with detail while being able to maintain an overview of the entire monitored area.

The makers say that the Q6000-E provides multiple, individually configurable video streams in H.264 compression to optimise bandwidth and storage without it is claimed compromising image quality. Motion JPEG is also supported.

Any AXIS Q60- E camera is mounted inside the Q6000-E, allowing also existing Q60-E installations to be upgraded to monitor wide areas, while capturing detail of interest. There’s no need for any mounting brackets or extra equipment as the Q6000-E uses the same brackets and network cable as the Q60-E. The Q6000-E comes with Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) through Q60-E, eliminating the need for power cables. The Q6000-E is planned to be available in the last quarter of 2014 through the firm’s distribution channels.
