World Accreditation Day

by Mark Rowe

The National Security Inspectorate (NSI), the UKAS accredited certification body for the security and fire safety sectors, is supporting World Accreditation Day. It’s Saturday, June 9, 2018.

Launched by the IAF (international Accreditation Forum) and ILAC (International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation), World Accreditation Day is a global initiative to raise awareness of the importance of accreditation; this year’s theme is “delivering a safer world”. UKAS is hosting an event as the UK Accreditation Service, for public sector officials at the House of Lords.

Organisers point out that our expectation of safety, whether in the places where we live, work and relax, the products we use, the food we eat or how we travel, is often not matched by reality. Closing this gap requires close collaboration between government, regulators and businesses.

NSI reports that its role is to help keep people safer in their work and home when it comes to security and fire protection by independently assessing the competence of organisations across a wide range of services from the installation of CCTV, intruder alarms and access control to guarding services and life safety fire risk assessments, a legal requirement for any organisation employing more than five people.

Richard Jenkins, pictured, NSI Chief Executive said: “World Accreditation Day is a significant moment for us all to build awareness of accreditation in raising standards of safety and security. For over 45 years we have been protecting businesses, homeowners and the general public by independently auditing companies within the security and fire safety sectors. Today over 1800 companies are approved by NSI against the relevant British and international standards and codes of practice for the services they deliver. NSI approval is a benchmark of competence and a trusted hallmark for buyers of security systems, fire safety and guarding services.”
