Access Control

Single reader controller

by Mark Rowe

Software House, part of the Security Products business unit of Tyco, has introduced the iSTAR Edge Single-Reader Controller. It’s a one-reader version of its iSTAR Edge controller.

The iSTAR Single-Reader Controller is an extension of the two- and four-reader iSTAR Edge models. Suitable the makers say for space-saving placement above or near the door, the reader controller can be clustered with other iSTAR models, including the iSTAR eX and iSTAR Pro, to provide peer-to-peer communication, intrusion zones, keypad commands, extended card formats, door monitoring and anti-passback.

Like the other iSTAR Edge devices, the single-reader version uses Power over Ethernet (PoE) , which the company says reduces installation costs. The product provides localised decision-making at each door with a local card-holder storage of more than 400,000 cardholders, with local alarm and transaction buffering.

Rafael Schrijvers, Product Marketing Manager, Tyco Security Products EMEA, says: “As part of an end-to-end system, the iSTAR Edge Single-Reader Controller provides a cost-effective and highly functional solution for customers looking to use their existing infrastructure to secure smaller offices or areas within a larger corporate setting.”

Other product features include four supervised inputs onboard; two wet/dry relay outputs with selectable lock voltage; dedicated input for fire alarm interlock; and local display to assist in start-up and diagnostics. It is also FIPS 201 compliant, making it an option for US government smart card installations.
