Resilience summit

by Mark Rowe

With 54 per cent of the world’s population living in urban areas – a proportion that is expected to increase to 66 per cent by 2050 – the security and resilience of cities around the world is set to face a number of difficult challenges. As cities continue to grow economically, technologically, socially, and inter-dependently, it is vital that we exploit the ideas that link together concepts and best practices so that we can meet, and collectively overcome, the challenges that threaten the future of our cities.

Hence the Global Resilience Summit, on October 15, at Kings Place near Kings Cross, an event by the business group London First. Topics include: how can cities develop better forecasting and warning mechanisms? How can the integration of components lead to stability? How can we afford the required redundancy of resources? Is smart technology making us more connected or more vulnerable?

Speakers include Paul Taylor, the Head of Information Protection and Business Resilience at audit firm KPMG; Thomas McCarthy, the American Chief Security Officer at NBCUniversal; Rob Wainwright, Director of the European policing body Europol; and the former senior policeman Sir David Veness.
