Cyber step up

by Mark Rowe

Senior business managers are being urged to ‘step up’ and take more responsibility in the fight against cyber-crime. Attacks by criminals via the internet, computer networks and telecoms systems are costing UK businesses and individuals, and almost all of us are now reliant on the internet to conduct our affairs.

Commenting on a recent report on the BBC’s Today programme, Jonathon Shaw, retired Chief of Defence Staff, British Army said that senior managers have a degree of ownership for implementing cyber-defence strategies as outlined recently by the Government.

To help business leaders understand the issues and responsibilities, a consultancy, The Security Company, has issued guidelines covering the need for staff awareness and defence strategies on its web site – http://www.thesecurityco.com/news/expert-comment/are-you-cyber-ready/

Bernadette Palmer of The Security Company says: “Employees are the ‘eyes and ears’ of a company. If they are not alert to risks their organisation can be compromised. A comprehensive awareness and education programme will minimise the costs of security failures.” For further information – visit http://www.thesecurityco.com
