Keep It Locked” is the message that SOCA and UK Border Agency are spreading in a joint campaign encouraging lorry drivers to keep their vehicles secure.
A new booklet has been produced to raise awareness among drivers and the wider haulage industry of the threats they face from illegal attempts to gain access to their vehicles. Twelve thousand are to be distributed to lorry drivers at UK ports of entry.
TruckPol estimate that criminals who steal lorry consignments cost the UK economy around £250m per year, and drivers returning from the continent can also be subject to targeting by individuals seeking to enter the UK illegally.
Among the booklet’s key messages is a reminder to drivers of the importance of securing trailer doors and panniers to help make their vehicle less of a target. As well as securing their loads, drivers are also urged to park in a designated lorry parking area wherever possible.
The Lorry Crime Prevention Booklet is now available for haulage companies and drivers to download on the SOCA and UK Border Agency websites.
