As the director of the Centre for Counter Fraud Studies at the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies, University of Portsmouth, Prof Mark Button is giving an inaugural lecture on Wednesday, June 11.

Its title, ‘The dark side of crime’; lifting the veil on fraud’. This comes a week after the centre’s latest annual conference which will be featured in the July 2014 print issue of Professional Security.

After the one-hour lecture, a drinks reception follows. He is the author and editor of many articles, chapters and books on private security and fraud, including Private Security (Palgrave, 2000), one of the few books devoted to the UK private security sector; and most recently Fraud Corruption and Sport, published by Palgrave, and reviewed in the May 2014 print issue of Professional Security magazine. Some of his most significant research projects include leading the research on behalf of the National Fraud Authority (NFA) and ACPO on fraud victims. Before he entered academia at Portsmouth he was a Research Assistant to the senior Labour MP Bruce George specialising in policing, security and home affairs; and he has been a local parliamentary candidate for Labour.
