Secure day for hospital cyclists

by Mark Rowe

A joint effort between North Wales Police and the security department of a Welsh hospital sought to make cyclists feel more secure while leaving their bikes on site during the day.

Glan Clwyd Hospital security staff with North Wales Police and the hospital’s own Police Officer PC Jim Jones ran a BikeRegister (www.bikeregister.com) security bike marking day on the hospital grounds at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd.

The bike marking day was conducted by Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) Peter Markowski and Rebecca Evans and was organised due to the rising popularity of staff members wanting to keep healthy by cycling to work. Staff and the public were encouraged to bring their bikes to the hospital to have them security-marked by the police officers.

Steve Jones, Glan Clwyd Hospital Security Manager, said: “There are a lot of staff who currently use their bikes to travel to work and cut down on car travel but were concerned about the security of their bikes left on site whilst they were at work. This initiative will go some way in restoring confidence amongst bike owners that their bikes will be a lot safer whilst left at the hospital.

“We are really grateful to North Wales Police for coming on site and carrying out this initiative. Having a security stamped bike gives you that little extra peace of mind and will hopefully encourage people to keep peddling to work in the future.”
