Tommy’s drug checks

by msecadm4921

Tommy has been helping police to identify people in possession of drugs in Derbyshire pubs and clubs. Tommy the specialist dog and his handler came from West Midlands Police to help with the operation and were funded by Amber Valley Community Safety Partnership.

With licensing officers and Derbyshire Police they visited licensed premises in Ripley to target the possession and supply of drugs in the town. Under the Misuse of Drugs Act more than 30 people were searched and one arrest was made during the course of the evening. A 28 year-old woman was arrested in the Regal Ballroom and has been released on police bail for the possession of suspected cocaine.

Derbyshire PC James Pendrill said: “Last year Derbyshire Constabulary with Derbyshire Police Authority conducted a number of public consultation events throughout the county. More than 3,000 people were surveyed and as a result the top priorities were identified. Drug dealing/supplying was at number one and drug taking was at number four. This highlights that residents are very concerned about drugs in the community and by conducting operations of this nature we can help tackle the issue.”
