Pub scam advice

by msecadm4921

Kent Police is warning pub-goers to beware of a distraction scam being used to steal peoples’ valuables. The scam involves people approaching customers sitting at tables in pubs or pub gardens, putting leaflets and flyers on the table to distract them. For more personal safety advice visit the Kent Police website

When the scammers take the leaflets away they also take mobile phones that were on the table.

The latest incident was at the Halfway House pub in Challock on Sunday, August 5. The scammers stole an iPhone and Blackberry using this technique. Kent Police is currently running a campaign reminding people to Stay Safe and ensure their personal belongings are out of sight of potential thieves.

Here are some useful crime prevention steps for people to follow when they’re out and about:

• don’t leave valuables unattended or on display i.e. on top of a pram, trolley or table
• keep your bag zipped up and in front of your body – use a purse chain if you can
• only take with you what you need for a trip out – leave valuables at home if you can
• don’t tempt thieves by displaying your phone or mp3 player as you walk along
• security mark valuable items to reduce the risk of theft.
