UK water asset protection

by Mark Rowe

Thames Water commissioned perimeter security product company Zaun to secure the compound at a Kent site. The remote location meant early detection and notification of attempted intrusion was essential. Zaun asked the electronic and electrified perimeter security manufacturer Harper Chalice to supply its FenceSecure Perimeter Intrusion Detection system (PID), a CPNI approved product for protection of Government-specified sites of Critical National Infrastructure. Zaun Group company Binns Fencing installed Zaun’s ArmaWeave fencing, and had to hand dig the trench to install the 3m-high fencing as there was no access for mechanical diggers.

The work was part of AMP6, the ‘Asset Management Programme’ for water companies. Some £200m has been allocated to security alone to bring Thames Water’s estate up to Defra standards and prepare for eventualities.

Thames Water manages more than 4,500 sites, most unmanned. Accidental pollution, the safety hazard of sewage, the potential for theft and vandalism are among risks.

Zaun sales and marketing director Chris Plimley said: “We’re experiencing growing success in the water and power industries because of our unique ability alongside Binns and Harper Chalice to offer design, manufacture and installation of the most secure turnkey perimeter protection solutions on the market.”
