Solar farm perimeter detection

by Mark Rowe

Solar farms – fields of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels as used to generate electricity – can cover acres, and require perimeter detection to protect the equipment. The detector manufacturer GJD was employed to provide security lighting to work with the CCTV system on a solar farm in Cambridgeshire. It required intelligent detection lighting and CCTV for a 13MW PV installation. Project specifications included reliable security lighting even in bad weather, accurate angle illumination and a light range of up to 95 metres. Any lighting had to use low power consumption, without compromising on quality and efficiency.

GJD reports that it worked with the installer AGE CCTV Systems and the project manager at the solar farm. GJD’s Infra-Red Clarius IM illuminator was chosen.

Gary Whiteman, Director of Sawtry, Cambridgeshire-based AGE CCTV Systems said: “AGE choose Clarius LED illuminators from GJD to complement our CCTV system as it provides competitively priced, high performance LED lighting in a rural environment.” The illuminator delivers night-time images (pictured), as well as working with black and white or day and night cameras, providing a light invisible to the human eye, but fully visible to the CCTV camera. Each unit is fitted with integrated control circuitry to control LED output, delivering consistent illumination for the farm and a projected working life of more than ten years.
