Hotel locks

Snoozebox is a new name in transportable, temporary hotel accommodation, for instance at the Olympics, the British Grand Prix and the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Offered are from 40 to 400 rooms. Snoozebox can be ready to welcome guests within 48 hours. The manufacturer Kaba was asked to provide locking for the guest room doors and recommended the contactless Ilco E790 electronic lock.

The product works on RFID (radio frequency identification) waves, and offers an audit trail of the last 400 transactions.

As for installation there’s no card reader to maintain and clean.

All electronics and batteries are located in the front lock housing – hence there’s no need to disturb guests for maintenance checks. Software upgrades can be done on site.

Snoozebox originally trialled 40 locks last year and now have installed just under 300 with a further 400 on order.

Snoozebox was founded by the Robert Breare who had the idea after a bad experience while attending the 24 Hours race at Le Mans.

“I was on a campsite at 3am when I needed to go to the loo,” he said. “I faced a 20-minute walk, then a 20-minute queue for filthy loos and thought “There’s got to be a better way”.

Each Snoozebox has its own power and water without the need for hard standing. The containers can be stacked up to five high and each bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, air-conditioning, television and free wi-fi.

A lower-spec version also been developed for use on building projects or by local government and the military. The first 40-room hotel made its debut at last year’s British Grand Prix, a deal brokered by former driver David Coulthard. The former McLaren Mercedes driver has been named president of Snoozebox and will advise the company as it seeks to expand with the Grand Prix circuit. He said, “The concept of a “Turnkey” hotel, delivered to an event and fully operational in 48 hours just clicked with me immediately. For spectators, staff and teams it works on every level at every event.”

Snoozebox recently housed over 600 performers from around the world for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant. The event took place in the private grounds of Windsor Castle and was designed to reflect the relationship between the Queen and the armed forces. More than 2,500 servicemen and women marched past the Queen in Windsor Castle before mustering in an arena.

Snoozebox is providing “on-site” rooms at the Isle of Man TT Race. Within the TT village next to the main Grandstand in Douglas the Isle of Man Snoozebox has 240 rooms at the TT races. And Snoozebox were granted building permission to erect a temporary “Olympic Village” hotel to hold staff in Hainault Forest Country Park, Essex.

The locks manufacturer meanwhile reports that its pExtra LAM SBS mechanical locking cylinder has met all requirements set out by the Sold Secure SS312 Diamond Standard, in association with the Master Locksmiths Association and the Secured by Design scheme.

Based on EN 1303:2005 and the General Vulnerability Assessment from BS 3621 this standard incorporates extra requirements to address issues relating to the security provided by cylinders and associated keys.

Sold Secure seeks to reducing the risk of crime by the assessment of security products. Set up in 1992 by Northumbria and Essex Police with the help and backing of the Home Office, Sold Secure is now owned and

administered by the Master Locksmiths Association and has recently amended the SS312 standard level to incorporate a much longer attack time requirement.

The new Kaba pExtra LAM SBS (Diamond) cylinder includes a collar fixed to the housing and incorporates an extra level of protection for the lockcase. Whilst the current attack criteria does not cover lockcase attacks, Kaba see it as an important element of door security.

The Sold Secure scheme has ties with a number of police forces and insurers who provide regular information regarding the methods of theft and the tools utilised by criminals in their areas. This helps to maintain up to date specifications and means security products can be assessed in the light of the risk they are likely to encounter when in use.
