Fencing for restored car park

by Mark Rowe

A tired 1960s multi-storey car park in the centre of Bedford, facing demolition; underwent major refurbishment works totalling about £2.7m; as part of the Bedford £8.8m ‘Gateway Regeneration Project’ headed by contractor Makers Construction. The Allhallows car park won the ‘Best Car Park Refurbishment Award’ in the 2015 British Parking Awards.

The works included Jacksons Fencing supplying security fencing and gates to cover the site levels, including non-standard raked, radius panels and bespoke gates through a high volume car park being redeveloped. During the works, the car park outside and inside was extensively upgraded. It includes an arcade of shops on its ground floor and installation of solar panels to generate power for the local authority.

With a remit to prevent and restrict access during hours of closure to mitigate against vandalism or malicious activity Jacksons designed, made and installed both Barbican Imperial and Sentry steel vertical bar fencing, totalling over 80 metres across the site.

Used as barrier protection for the first and second floors the Barbican Imperial fencing, a round pale vertical bar fence, with a pale-through-rail design has been designed in way that the pales are close together meaning passing large objects through is difficult.

For the lower levels of the car park Jacksons installed 1.8 metres high Barbican Imperial between the 2 metre high concrete piers to mitigate against people climbing through and into the car park. With a full length pale-through-rail design Imperial pales protrude from both ends of the panel, making passing items or climbing under the system difficult thus reducing the opportunity for any malicious activity. Bespoke fan panels were also installed above the entrance to prevent any attempt to cross the exterior walls of the parking area.

Matching gates were designed and installed to all areas and levels of the car park with special attention given to securing the stairways which was achieved by gating off the pedestrian walkways and landings. Installation of low level Sentry Fencing provided a safe rail top alternative for the public entering or exiting the car park on via the main ramp. Visit www.jacksons-security.co.uk.
