360 degree panoramic camera

by Mark Rowe

Arecont Vision, the US IP megapixel camera manufacturer, introduced a 12 megapixel (MP) 360 degree panoramic camera with true Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) at ASIS 2013. The new SurroundVideo 12MP WDR 360 degree panoramic camera produces quality images of wide areas even in the most challenging lighting the makers say without the aberrations produced by single sensor fish-eye panoramic cameras. About half the size of Arecont Vision’s previous SurroundVideo 360 degree panoramic dome camera, the new 12MP camera’s unobtrusive design makes it suitable the company says for applications indoors and out.

Raul Calderon, Senior Vice President, Arecont Vision, said: “Our new SurroundVideo 12MP WDR 360 degree panoramic camera provides full field coverage using four 3MP sensors for high megapixel resolution throughout the area under surveillance compared to single sensor panoramic products which have a drop off in resolution within the scene. By combining panoramic and WDR functionality, this unique imaging solution continues to build Arecont Vision’s leadership position in megapixel imaging technology.”

WDR delivers a dynamic range of up to 100dB at full resolution without lowering the frame rates, the makers say. By combining long and short exposures in the same field-of-view, WDR maximises the amount of detail in bright and dark areas of a scene. The WDR performance of Arecont Vision cameras represents an up to 50dB improvement (300X) in dynamic range compared to conventional cameras, according to the firm.

Four 3MP WDR image sensors inside the SurroundVideo 12MP camera each provide 2,048 x 1,536-pixel resolution for a total resolution of 8,192 x 1,536-pixels. The dome housing is IP66 environmentally rated and IK10 vandal resistant. The camera is ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum) conformant.
