Traffic system

by Mark Rowe

In Poland, Tricity is three major northern cities — Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot, on the coast of Gdańsk Bay, Baltic Sea. The area of 414.81 square kilometres has nearly one million commuters each day. To better manage the city traffic needs and handle congestion, the local authority decided on an intelligent traffic system (ITS).

The project started in 2010. The ITS systems have Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPRs), red light enforcement and speed regulation to combat traffic jams. For ANPR systems, Dahua 1.4-megapixel and 11-megapixel HD traffic cameras are in use at intersections on main roads, taking a snapshot of front and back of vehicles respectively. Loops and video detection are used to improve accuracy. Anti-speed systems are in use to issue fines to control urban driving speeds..

Green waves are adopted on lights intersection, allowing continuous traffic flow over several intersections in one main direction, which not only reduces the length and frequency of congestion, but also cuts co2 emissions and improves fuel efficiency of vehicles, meanwhile, allowing more time for pedestrians at crossings. Piotr Wisniewski from Radar system, a local distributor in Poland, said: “We already assured different customers in Poland and neighboring countries to work on ITS projects based on Dahua cameras and detectors. With Dahua’s good quality and services, all the projects we have done proven its stability and greatly facilitate cities’ traffic, leading people a better life.”

And Bill Zhou, Senior ITS Engineer at Dahua Technology, said: “It is a great example that a European city uses Chinese ITS deployment, we appreciate our partner’s trust and the effort they have made. Traffic problem is a common issue for many expanding cities, and our ITS is only helping the city reinforce but also giving a better, smarter and more efficient city.”
