Workplace ethics and fraud defence

by Mark Rowe

In the June print issue of Professional Security magazine, we feature one high street profit protection man’s advice that a sloppily-kept staff toilet is a sure sign of other workplace shortcomings – which might include shrinkage and staff threat.

Likewise poor workplace ethics always mean weaker fraud defences, say the organisers of a Friday, June 5 breakfast briefing by the Fraud Advisory Panel.

When a concerned employee feels they have no choice but ‘go public’, the consequences are often serious for organisation and whistleblower alike.
This breakfast briefing will investigate those critical connections between business ethics, workplace values and staff behaviour, and examining the steps organisations can take to cultivate a corporate culture that increases fraud resilience. The event, titled ‘Do the right thing: how the best ethical workplaces can support staff and reduce fraud risk’ will:

consider corporate whistleblowing from a personal perspective, including motivating factors and the decision-making process;
look at ways to understand the culture and integrity of people within an organisation – how does good culture reduce the risk of fraud and wrongdoing?
examine ways in which staff can be helped to develop the good judgement and confidence they will need to ‘do the right thing’.

The speakers invited are:

Cathy James is chief executive of Public Concern at Work. She will chair the event, and outline the latest on whistleblowing policy and practice.

Wendy Addison, the founder of SpeakOut-SpeakUp, will give an account of her own personal journey from senior treasury manager to homelessness – having exposed the biggest corporate disaster in South African history.

And Prof Roger Steare is honorary visiting professor of organisational ethics as well as corporate philosopher in residence at Cass Business School. He is author of Ethicability: how to decide what’s right and find the courage to do it and creator of MoralDNA personality profiling. He will look at the importance of ethics, culture and people in reducing fraud risk. The event runs from 8.45am at Chartered Accountants’ Hall, Moorgate Place, London EC2R 6EA.
