Register joiners

by Mark Rowe

Peter Houlis of the Tyneside installation company 2020 Vision Systems is among the new names on the Register of Chartered Security Professionals. It’s a first for the register as Peter is from the systems side. He started in 1974 as a Trainee Engineer with Security Alarms (Northern Ltd); and formed North Shields-based 2020 in 1992. Chris Hoad, Head of Security and Emergency Planning at the University of Birmingham; and Benjamin Chidyamoto of the African Development Bank in Tunis. Briefly, Chris Hoad was an RAF Police man who then spent 17 years in private sector security and the last 10 years heading security at two UK universities.

Briefly, the register for security professionals belongs to the Worshipful Company of Security Professionals and is a means of recognising and maintaining the high standards and ongoing proficiency for individuals. A person joining the Register is known as a Chartered Security Professional, and uses CSyP as a post nominal.

To become a CSyP, you must have a good general awareness of security in the round; although you may be a specialist in one particular field. The Security Institute manages all aspects of the register. To apply to join you can go through the Security Institute or the UK chapter of the security management body ASIS. This register is separate from the institute’s continuing work to become a chartered institute for security managers.
