The Mall Selborne Walk, in Walthamstow, has a new-build security control room that went live in April 2005.

The east London shopping centre has been operating for 18 years and is one of 22 malls operated and owned by the Mall Group in the UK. A new CCTV system includes the video monitoring of the interior of the shopping centre building, retail shop fronts and car parking using Pelco Spectra III series dome cameras. Alex Bagnall, Operations Manager at The Mall Selborne Walk says: “The main security threats to The Mall Selborne Walk and surrounding areas include everyday occurrences such as theft and criminal damage through to the more sensitive cases of lost children or threatening behaviour. Our investment in a new CCTV control room gives us the ability now to effectively protect staff and shoppers.”

Digital recording

Inside the control room are four JVC 17-inch high resolution LCD monitors, model LM-17G mounted on Ergotron stands at the operator’s desk. These are used for monitoring alarms, CCTV camera images, shopping centre car park images and spot monitoring. For recording of video images, the system incorporates an Integral DigitalSentry digital recording system by Tour Andover Controls enabling any event to be located within three to four seconds, installers G1 report.

Monitors

Six JVC TM-A210G high resolution colour monitors are installed in a monitor wall at eye level for CCTV image monitoring. Control room furniture was manufactured by Gresham Wood. G1 has also installed the office air conditioning. Chris Best, director at the London-based installer says: “The security control room has been designed for long term use and will be monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We have provided full training to control room personnel, as well as the supply, installation and maintenance of the electronic surveillance systems. Around the clock security is provided by the 24-hour G1 security maintenance line.” Alex Bagnall adds: ”Motion detection has been introduced using the Integral digital recording system which we didn’t have before. Our security control room is so well designed and we are 100 per cent sure that it will improve the monitoring environment to improve the security and safety of visitors to our shopping centre. The service from G1 has been very good and the quality of the CCTV images and monitors are excellent. The Mall Selborne Walk is actively involved as a member of the Action Against Business Crime partnership which aims to support and develop business crime partnerships in local areas and establish firm links between businesses, crime reduction partnerships, police and local agencies. G1 have been instrumental in providing us with a solution which enables us to be actively involved in this partnership.”
