Championship football club Cardiff City have joined the campaign against railway crime.
Network Rail has presented Cardiff City football club with £20,000 to support their Football in the Community programme. It involves footballers warning local children about the dangers of playing near the railway.
Highlighting the number of railway crime hotspos in South Wales, Mark Langman, Wales and Marches area general manager, said: "Cardiff City FC’s programme provides curriculum time coaching in schools and holiday courses for children in these hotspot areas. The coaching sessions not only help children to learn and develop new skills but also deliver safety messages to educate children about the dangers of trespassing on the railway." Lee Robinson, Cardiff City FC’s Football in the Community manager, added: "We are now into our third year of sponsorship with Network Rail. The partnership has flourished throughout our regions, particularly within primary schools in Cardiff, Rhondda Cynon Taff and Caerphilly."
Education, youth
Network Rail has a dedicated team of education officers that visit schools; liaise with organisations such as youth offending teams and local authorities to raise the awareness of the dangers of using the railway as a playground. Young people have their own web site where they can win prizes and learn all about rail and personal safety in a easy to understand format.
