Magna Carta guarded

by Mark Rowe

St Albans Cathedral will temporarily display the historic Magna Carta as the cathedral marks the 800th anniversary of the city’s role in the charter. The cathedral , insured for over £30m, dates to 1215; the original Magna Carta is on loan from Lincoln Cathedral.

Displaying such a priceless piece of history presents a security challenge. ADT Fire & Security installed an extra security system within a secure vault built by a specialist company.

Not only does the new temporary security system provide peace of mind in protecting the exhibit, it’s described as easy to use for wardens familiar with the ADT systems at the cathedral already. ADT says that thanks to its experience of working in the cathedral, it was able to design and install the extra equipment aesthetically in keeping with the site . ADT designed the system for this temporary exhibition so that it could be removed quickly and easily when the Magna Carta returns to Lincoln.

Guy Madley, Business and Projects Officer at St Albans Cathedral, said: “It is thanks to ADT’s security expertise coupled with its deep experience and understanding of securing heritage sites, and specifically St Albans Cathedral, that the Magna Carta can be enjoyed by the public without any risk or compromise to the safety of one of Britain’s most significant historical artefacts. We are very grateful for ADT agreeing to be one of our major sponsors and making this remarkable opportunity possible.”

And David Myers, Regional Managing Director, ADT Fire & Security, said: “ADT was delighted to be able to play a part in this historic event. Our background in securing and managing historic sites gave us the ideal experience to take on this challenge, and with only one month to implement the project, we drew on our extensive skills to ensure the robust security solution was ready on time.”
