Leeds wall

A Custom Consoles Media Wall monitor display and SteelBase desks form the technical heart of a new traffic control facility in Leeds. The system covers traffic flow in and around the city, so supervisory staff can minimise congestion.

Custom Consoles Sales Manager Gary Fuller says: “Images from colour cameras monitoring major junctions and approach roads are relayed to 24 display screens mounted on a 5.4 metre wide Media Wall positioned in front of a SteelBase master control desk.

“Two of the screens on the Media Wall are 42 inch. The others are all 24 inch. An additional eight screens are attached directly to the desk on Ergotron monitor support arms. Each of the desk-mounted screens can be adjusted in height and viewing angle to match the requirements of the two supervisors. We have supplied and installed all the monitors as well as the mounting system.”

The Media Wall incorporates height-adjustable horizontal beams suspended between 2.3 metre high aluminium columns. Large and small display panels, or a mixture of sizes, can be attached to the horizontal beam sections using pivoting VESA and plasma-mount fittings. Horizontal cable trunking is provided at the rear of each beam and vertical trunking at the rear of each column to accommodate power and video cables. Equipment pods with 19 inch racking behind removable vented panels can be incorporated at floor-level.

“The control desk faces towards the Media Wall and is of almost identical width,” Gary Fuller adds. “The project included a separate SteelBase desk for use by a senior supervisor. This is 1.5 metres in width and similar in style to the main control desk apart from the corners which are curved on a 100 millimetre radius. We also supplied KAB Seating Controller chairs which are designed primarily for use in surveillance and control stations.”

Both of the Custom Consoles SteelBase desks are finished in oak and built of high-grade MDF on 19 inch base frames with marmoleum worksurfaces. Hinged removable access doors at the rear provide front or rear access to computer workstations and related equipment. Features of the SteelBase range of technical desking include electrical cable management, power distribution and data panels plus, if required, variable-speed ventilation fans. SteelBase can be configured to provide an ergonomically efficient working environment for any size of control room. All elements of the desks are guaranteed against component failure for five years of normal use.
