Remembrance evening

by Mark Rowe

The Honourable Artillery Company in London was the venue for the Security Institute‘s annual evening of Remembrance on Thursday, November 16, organised by Institute deputy chairman Andrew Nicholls. A full house held a minute’s silence followed by a reading by a Volunteer Police Cadet of the poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. The night’s speaker was Met Police Deputy Commissioner Craig Mackey QPM, pictured.

The team of Volunteer Police Cadets (VPC) – the uniformed youth group which seeks to encourage the spirit of adventure and good citizenship among its members – helped with front of house, and were a very welcome addition to the evening.

The Institute also welcomed their latest corporate partner Excellentia Limited, and a Certificate of Admittance was presented to Director Derek Kerr by Baroness Ruth Henig CBE DL, President of the Security Institute. Derek said: “We are honoured to become a corporate partner and look forward to working even closer with the Institute to help promote the highest possible standards of integrity and professional competence in the business of security both nationally and internationally.”

Institute Chief Executive Rick Mounfield, himself a close protection specialist, is especially keen to take the relationship further to encourage personal development in the CP sector. He said: “Plans are already under way, to create a special interest group focussed on Personal protection and the associated skills. I know that Excellentia will be a fantastic partner for this SIG.”

This was Garry Evanson’s last formal engagement as chairman of the Institute, and it was announced that Dr Alison Wakefield, currently Vice-Chairman would step into the chairman’s role in 2018.

On the evening money was raised for the Metropolitan Police Commissioner’s Fund, which provides support for worthy causes involving officers and staff. The event was sponsored by Integral Security.
