A home security initiative is being run by West Mercia Police and local, Telford-based company SmartWater Technology Ltd. Over the next few weeks, all residents in the Leegomery and Sutton Hill areas of the town will receive a free SmartWater home security kit that will allow them to security mark their belongings. This is part of a “We Don’t Buy Crime” campaign that aims to tackle a range of acquisitive crimes including the burglary, car crime and pick-pocketing.
Telford-based SmartWater manufactures and supplies forensic marking products that can be used to protect valuables, business assets and vehicles. Every bottle of the forensic traceable liquid carries a unique forensic code that is registered to a specific address. Once applied, it is almost impossible to remove and can only be seen under ultraviolet (UV) light, the makers say. Officers from the local safer neighbourhood teams will be delivering SmartWater packs to all homes in Leegomery and Sutton Hill.
Residents in the St Georges area will receive a free crime-prevention pack including “We Don’t Buy Crime” window stickers and an ultraviolet marker pen.
Detective Chief Inspector Tom Harding said: “We are committed to making our areas as hostile as possible for criminals. Residents in Telford are sending out a clear warning to criminals that they are not welcome in the town and that if they are intent on committing crime there is a much higher chance they will be caught and prosecuted.”
