Ram raid attack foiled

by Mark Rowe

Locks, and two interlocking doors made by Warrior Doors Ltd, foiled a ram raid attack on a jeweller’s in Birmingham, trapping one of the culprits inside the shop as he tried to make his escape. The incident, caught on CCTV, featured a driver of a BMW 5 Series repeatedly ramming the car into the front of the shop. But the attacker was unable to smash his way through to gain access, past the Pickersgill-Kaye’s multipoint locks and the doors.

Pickersgill-Kaye, a trading division of ASSA ABLOY the door lock and physical security product company, makes locks that are the firm says designed for high value retail and critical national infrastructure applications.

One of the occupants, who had got out of the car and entered the premises before his accomplice started ramming the outside door, realised the BMW was no match for the jeweller’s security system and as he tried to flee was retained in the secure airlock pending arrival of the police, while the driver gave up the attack and fled down the road into a waiting get-away car.

The lock fitted to the door was Pickersgill-Kaye’s HS270 Morticed 3-point access control lock, which has an automatic deadlocking function and cylinder guard.

Warrior Doors managing director, Brett Barratt, said: “The whole event took less than three minutes, and the doors and shop front withstood the attack, keeping the shop owner, his daughter and grandchild and the two customers safe. The shop owner’s livelihood was maintained and the security interlocking doors still worked perfectly, locking and unlocking after the event.”

Available in surface mounted and mortice versions, Pickersgill-Kaye’s multi- and single-point locks are designed and manufactured in the UK. The makers add that the products are tested to European BS EN standards for panic and emergency exit as well as undergoing independent blast testing, cycle testing in excess of one million cycles and being fire tested, to BS EN standards, as part of a secure door set.

Pickersgill-Kaye’s locks are designed on CAD software and are subjected to testing on key operation, lock construction and overall durability and resistance to attack, to satisfy the operational requirements of national and international market sectors. Approvals include certification to LPS 1175 Issue 7 Levels SR3 and SR5 and government standards.
