Proximity access systems

by Mark Rowe

Videx has launched two new products in their access control range: a new standalone single door proximity access system, the MINI-SA2, and a multi-protocol proximity reader, the MINI-M, for Portal Plus and third party access systems. Both readers have a low profile design and are finished in a matt black ABS plastic. Three LEDs offer visual indication of operation while the internal sounder gives audible feedback. The MINI-SA2 is for a single entrance using shadow and delete cards without the need for PC or software components.

Neil Thomas, National Sales Manager, Videx said: “Many buildings simply need access control to a single main entrance however currently available systems often have multiple door capability and complicated programming options using a PC. The MINI-SA2 has all functions contained within a reader therefore no external controller is required, just a suitable power supply.”

The MINI-M is described by the makers as a compact multi-protocol proximity reader for use with the Videx Portal Plus range or third party access systems using Wiegand protocol. Typical applications for the MINI-M include access control within homes, commercial premises, schools, hospitals, residential housing and student accommodation blocks.

Numerous access control systems are available with different requirements and levels of complexity but in many cases the readers only need to allow or deny access to proximity cards. The new reader uses Wiegand communications protocol and is thus compatible the company says with many access systems, offering a way to manage access control effectively. The larger the number of doors (and hence readers) needed, the bigger the cost savings, it’s claimed.

Neil added: “Overall, both products offer a cost effective and easy to install and operate solution for any building where access needs to be restricted to known people who are in possession of a proximity card or key fob. Their simple design and low cost, as well as the ongoing technical support from Videx when purchased, provides great appeal to installers, consultants and end users alike.”
