Palace protectors

The Californian vehicle access control product manufacturer Delta Scientific, whose products are in use at Buckingham Palace, is 40. The company makes vehicle barricades, parking control equipment and guard booths. Services run from custom designs to installation and maintenance. More than 15,000 Delta systems work in 130 countries.

Greg Hamm, Delta Scientific vice president of sales and marketing, says: “Just recently, Delta barricades at the United States Consulate in Herat, Afghanistan, stopped a bomb-laden car and SUV from penetrating the entrances to the facility. The Taliban attacked the consulate in western Afghanistan with car bombs and guns, killing at least four Afghans, but failing to enter the compound or hurt any Americans. The two drivers of the explosives-filled vehicles did not survive.”

“It’s been a terrific forty years,” adds David Dickinson, Delta Scientific senior vice president. “Delta has shipped products worldwide to defend against truck bomb attacks. Looking back, Delta has continuously developed new products to meet new threats and applications. We continue to work with our customers on custom projects and we have a pipeline full of innovative products in test now with many more on the way.”

With a database of full-scale tests, Delta structural engineering staff deploy computer models that let them test new designs on the computer. Its engineers are able to analyse applications and design products to meet customer requirements.

Delta’s factory includes a full heavy steel fabrication department which routinely handles steel plate up to 2.0 inches. Multi-ton hoists operating on a network of 500 feet of bridge cranes transfer work in progress from work station to work station. Other departments include sheet metal fabrication and assembly, hydraulic and pneumatic assembly, electronic and control systems, heavy certified welding and testing of anti-terrorist barriers and barricades.

Delta builds and tests its own complete electro-mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic pumping systems, including control circuits, ranging from simple plug in relay types to Programmable Logic Controllers. The company assembles and tests its own Digital Vehicle Loop Detectors.

Delta has supplied counter-terrorist barricade systems to facilities around the world, including 160 US embassies and consulates in 130-plus countries as well as those of the UK and other nations. In the United States alone, Delta secures 110 Federal buildings, including courthouses and FBI locations. Over 85 percent of all US nuclear power plants are protected by Delta vehicle barricade systems.

Delta Scientific systems protect the US Capitol and other Washington landmark buildings, high-rise office buildings, corporate facilities, the Singapore parliament, power and water infrastructure locales, military bases, petrochemical plants, European castles and the private homes of celebrities and others in Beverly Hills and other gated communities.
