Online safety guidance

by Mark Rowe

The Door & Hardware Federation Powered Gate Group has published more safety guides. The DHF says that they cover range of powered gate safety issues. They can be downloaded by DHF members and non members at www.dhfonline.org.uk/publications-gates-automation.aspx.

The online library of advisory documents includes the DHF Guide to Gate Safety Legislation and Standards. The resource is for all those involved in the installation, inspection and maintenance of powered gates and those responsible for the safety of gates, including owners and facilities managers. The DHF Powered Gate Group produced the guides after a number of inspections of unsafe gate installations by the federation’s inspectors.

Nick Perkins, DHF training officer, said: “The publication of these latest guides is part of our continuing drive to raise standards of safety in the industry. There have been a number of incidents involving powered gates reported to us and our own inspectors have carried out many checks on non compliant gates. As a result we’ve significantly expanded our online library of advisory documents to cover the problems we have encountered.

“This expansion of our onlilne library, and the continuing success of our training course for installers and inspectors, underpins our commitment to significantly raising levels of powered gate safety in the UK.”

The guides detail the safety hazards found during inspection and advise how the hazards can be controlled. Topics covered include telescopic sliding gate safety, care in the use of safety circuits and how sliding gate rolling gear and swing gate ram mounting geometry impacts on safety. There is also a detailed guidance document for domestic, commercial and industrial owners of powered gate systems.
