Mechanical, digital combination locks

by Mark Rowe

Leigh Donoghue of www.LocksOnline.co.uk talks about access control, more specifically mechanical and digital combination locks that can be used to secure businesses or homes. He discusses the advantages and disadvantages of some access control solutions.

Codelocks

We have been working closely with CodeLocks for some time and we love their products for a couple of reasons. Firstly they are very secure, which is obviously the most important issue when looking at security products. With several thousand possible combinations on this model, the CL255, it is a safe bet to say that these models pack a punch in terms of the level of security they offer. These models allow a quick exit from the inside door via the use of the paddle turn, from the outside they provide entry via the keypad entry shown above. Another reason we really like these products is because they offer a massive range of finishes that can be suited to almost any style, they have really put thought into their designs which is often overlooked. Installation of these models is simple and easy, all sizing information is readily available, which allows for greater use of the common “retro-fit” scenario which is great.

Overall LocksOnline would recommend the CodeLock models to be installed around the home or small business. They offer a great security > price ratio, allowing you to install a wide range of these models relatively cheaply. They are great when used under these circumstances in medium traffic areas.

Kaba Simplex

Kaba is considered by us and many in the security industry to be a bit of a behemoth in terms of the level of security these models provide. They are used in many government buildings, banks, hospitals and custody suites across Europe and have shown to have great results. Their design is very robust, offering very ergonomical handle and knob options to make use of the simplex easier to use by all. This particular model, the Simplex L1011 offers 1000+ possible combinations which can be entered non-sequentially, allowing a greater number of possible combinations and methods of entry for the use. Inside use is made simple like many other combination lock models these days, a simple turn of the handle or knob will grant a quick exit, while maintaining high levels of security from the exterior side with use of combination entry. Overall we would recommend these models for businesses that are looking to upgrade their existing access control systems or are looking to move from standard locking systems to access control. Due to this model being purely mechanical, even in the of power failure it can still be used.

Yale Keyless Digital

Yale are an absoloutly massive company that has its products in almost every home in the UK and many more around Europe. So when we heard that they were making the Yale Keyless Digital combination lock, we were looking forward to it to say the least. We were not disappointed, Yale brought us this Keyless, Battery powered and blue touch screen back lit screen that would look great on anyone’s style of door. Code lengths are available in six to 12 digits and three types of codes are available. House (Given to family members), guest (For close friends) and fake (Which allows you to enter a slightly different code if you believe someone is trying to see you enter your code) This alone gives a massive range of choice and added layer of security that we are only used to seeing from a company like Yale. The exterior keypad is weather resistant to boot and comes in a beautiful satin chrome finish. No wiring or cable installation are needed with these models, low power consumption was a part of Yale design with the Keyless Digital combination lock, as well as low battery warnings, which has an emergency 9v battery connection underneath the keypad.

Overall LocksOnline loves Yale products and we are particularly fond of this model. They are relatively cheap, easily installed and provide an excellent level of security. We therefore recommend that these models can be used on both business and home security applications.

We hope this article has been useful and informative for you. Eventually access control solutions like these will be in every home, whether it be a mechanical or electrical form of entry, we are slowly moving away from standard key to handle locking such as Sash locks and Dead locks as this technology becomes readily available.
