Door spec is child’s play

by Mark Rowe

A Secured by Design (SBD) member company delivered bespoke solutions for two very different projects: one, an upgrade to a children’s nursery for the Royal Air Force; another for a retail and office development in central London.

The contracts were awarded to Project Specification Group, a unit of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland, which works with architects, property developers and design-led contractors over a project.

At RAF Benson in Oxfordshire, the unit specified door opening for an extension to an existing nursery building to allow for more than 100 children. The specification (pictured) demanded products tailored to the needs of children. These products included door closers, which require low opening forces but close to satisfy fire legislation, finger guards on doors to protect against trapped fingers and thumb locks on toilet doors installed at lower heights.

David Shields, National Specification Manager at Project Specification Group, said: “The plans for the build were incredibly multi-faceted, but as we have access to such a wide range of products, we were able to adapt and supply a bespoke specification. On a project like this, it’s not only about the products but also the added value that the team can provide, such as performance guarantees, door scheduling and understanding of the building’s on-going use.”

Project Specification Group worked there with designers Frankham Consultancy Group and contractors Antac.

Meanwhile at the 16-storey, commercial development at One New Street Square near Farringdon Station, the unit delivered a bespoke range of 204 complete doorsets from across the ASSA ABLOY range worth £345,000. Working with Robin Partington Architects and principal contractor, Skanska, these products included steel doors, architectural ironmongery and door closers. The building aimed to achieve BREEAM’s ‘Excellent’ environmental standard using sustainable building methods over the construction.

Project Specification Group’s David Shields said they worked with partners to recommend the most suitable solutions for each aspect of the building to combine the highest security with premium aesthetics.

“As the building aimed to secure a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, it was important to the client that we had a good understanding of how to integrate our products and still meet the requirements of an energy efficient building.”

Hazel Goss, Development Officer, SBD, said: “These examples show how ASSA ABLOY is working with its partners to deliver specifications to be fit for purpose for specific developments. With RAF Benson, it was all about putting the needs of children first so they can move about safely and easily. At the Farringdon development, it was about bringing together security, aesthetics and delivering energy efficiencies. These are two excellent projects,” added Hazel.

Also Door Group, a unit of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions UK & Ireland, supplied and installed security doors for London Underground stations including London Bridge, Bond Street, King’s Cross and Victoria as well as at Crossrail’s Elizabeth line stations at Canary Wharf, Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Woolwich and Custom House – and at other sites on the route.
