Kelvingrove CCTV

by Mark Rowe

A case study of a CCTV installation at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, in Glasgow, by Video Management Systems (VMS), also based in Glasgow. The cameras will be controlled and managed through Titan Vision, VMS’ IP CCTV video management and PSIM software.

Tom Gallacher, the museum’s security manager had several concerns. The south entrance has a long, narrow passageway, followed by two stairways on either side. One 360-degree camera, from manufacturer Oncam Grandeye, sees it all and is able to prevent loitering and vandalism.

Gallacher has another camera at the north entrance, which has the same layout but with the addition of a statue that is the occasional target of graffiti. The third camera covers the gift shop in case of shoplifters. Each camera is discreet and replaces the ugliness and expense of having three or four cameras to cover the same zones, the installer points out.

Gallacher says: “If an incident occurs, we can review what happened up to the moment in detail. This helps with the management of the museum’s security service, and makes everything we do more efficient.”

VMS Sales Director, Tony Sinden, said: “The Oncam 360 camera is popular with our customers above all for two reasons: the forensic capability of reviewing a recorded scene in detail, and the efficiency of replacing several cameras with a single, unobtrusive device.”
