Award for campus installation

by Mark Rowe

The Scottish-based installer Boston Networks and network video product company Axis Communications have been awarded the title of ‘Security Project or Installation of the Year’ at the Security & Fire Excellence Awards 2014. It was for the IP-based surveillance install across the University of the West of Scotland’s multi-campus estate as featured in our October 2014 print issue.

Paul Goodbrand, operations director at Boston Networks added: “This project is a fantastic example of a wholly successful IP migration that utilised and built upon the university’s existing assets to streamline and enhance its security estate. The university now benefits from global-leading surveillance technology that supports multiple stakeholders and has enabled it to centrally control disparate campuses, spanning a large geographical area, to significantly improve the security of students and staff.

“Moreover, Boston Networks continues to partner with the University to fully maintain its security system and design future-proof solutions that will further integrate additional security services.”

The network installer and Axis together designed the IP-based system featuring HD-quality footage and a video management interface across the university’s multi-campus estate. Over 200 Axis network cameras are managed on Milestone XProtect Expert open platform IP VMS software.

The new system enabled command centre control and offers edge storage support, failover recording servers and redundant management servers so that recordings are never interrupted and access to the system is always maintained. Discussions are now underway to extend the Axis camera coverage to the university’s Hamilton and Dumfries campuses.

The 2014 award ceremony was on Thursday, November 27, at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane, in London and drew 1000 industry practitioners.
