Smoke detectors

by Mark Rowe

Security and fire products for the protection of data centres and critical infrastructure are now available from UTC Climate, Controls & Security.

Mark Staples, Pre-Sales Manager for the UK, said: “With our commitment to technical innovation in fire, intrusion, video and integration we provide a complete choice of solutions specifically for high risk applications such as data centres.”

Providing warning of fire, the new LaserSense range of aspirated smoke detectors incorporates a patented analytics system that, according to the makers, continually optimises detection sensitivity. Called ClassiFire, the system is designed to ensure a consistent level of protection, resulting it is claimed in a reduced chance of nuisance alarms. The product also has a laser dust discrimination algorithm.

Also new. a line of wireless fire detection devices for use with its Ziton ZP2 and ZP3 panels. The wireless detectors operate in the European-approved 868MHz frequency band and complement the existing ZP7 addressable devices. They allow complete hybrid systems to be used in any Ziton installation.

The latest Aritech wireless PIRcam sensor is a combined camera and Passive Infrared (PIR) unit for visual verification. The PIRcam makes verification-enabled intruder systems much easier to design and install.

“Housed in a neat single unit the PIRcam is a very useful new option for upgrading intruder systems in applications where rapid confirmation of a break-in is vital,” says Mark Staples, Pre-Sales Manager for the UK.

For site protection, UTC Fire & Security now also offers detection products including acoustic cable solutions and Active Infrared (AIR) beam devices. The FlexiPI (DF450) is a microphonic sensor cable solution designed for indoor use that provides protection for all unsupervised buildings. By detecting all attempts to break through or attack the building’s fabric the FlexiPI (DF450) offers a method of alarm triggering. The system is suitable the makers say for sites such as warehouses, bank vaults, critical storage facilities where other detection technologies may not work well.

“The improved microphonic cable provides more uniform sensitivity for reliable detection across the whole protected area,” says Leslie Nortje, Technical Manager. “Performance has also been improved with the inclusion of more calibration options for fine-tuning.”

And for outdoor applications, the FlexPS (DF951) is a fence-mounted intrusion detection system. FlexPS sensor cables are designed to be installed on a range fence types, detecting vibrations caused by climbing, cutting, lifting or disturbing the fence fabric. Each FlexPS processor can monitor the activity from one or two sensor zones, and will report the alarm and supervision status of each zone. A FlexPS network option allows remote sensitivity setting and alarm collection, via the Network Manager Software and Network Manager Unit.
