Handheld radiation detector

by Mark Rowe

Symetrica is to launch a handheld radiation detector, the VeriFinder, officially at Security & Policing 2016. The product is already being deployed by European customs authorities. The detector, pictured, is the UK makers say for first responders, border officials, security staff and others who need radioactive threat verification.

Built around Symetrica’s proprietary Discovery Technology, the VeriFinder radio-isotope identifier (RIID) supports simultaneous identification of multiple isotopes in 30 seconds or less – exceeding the performance requirements of the ANSI N42.34 standard for handheld identification equipment, the firm says. A patented stabilization system eliminates the need for ongoing calibration and annual maintenance, it is claimed.

VeriFinder weighs 1.85kg. The three-button interface can be used with a single gloved hand and user alerts include audio, vibration, LED and information on the built-in display. A Li-Ion battery offers up to eight hours of use and can be recharged from mains or vehicle power. Dr Geraint Dermody, Symetrica’s Director of Business Development, said: “The VeriFinder adds the ability to scan inaccessible areas, which is an essential new capability within an integrated detection framework. The ability for the unit to continuously calibrate itself ensures consistently high levels accuracy and the option to network multiple detectors, as well as high levels of uptime and the lowest total cost of ownership.”

The Security & Policing Home Office event from March 8 to 10 is aimed at police, law enforcement and security.
