Embedded vision can literally save your life. But this sophisticated technology that marries embedded systems and computer vision is just beginning to scratch the surface of its true potential, writes Niall Jenkins, Research Manager for Video Surveillance & Security Services for IHS Inc, the market research company.

In the algorithm-rich world of embedded vision, faces, gestures and behaviours can be detected and interpreted by electronic systems, and powerful microprocessors can combine with advanced machine vision to make sense of images. Endowed with the gift of embedded vision, newly sighted machines can perform astounding feats of visual interpretation.

True, the embedded vision space is still small at present. Even in the established markets of automotive, industrial automation, physical security and business intelligence, embedded vision last year attained a global penetration rate of just 11 percent of the total addressable market. And by 2018, levels will inch up to only 12 percent.
