Business park goes electronic

by Mark Rowe

A case study of a recently refurbished business park in Manchester that went from manned guarding to an electronic system.

Greencourt Business Park, now known as Manchester Green, is near Manchester Airport and has five large buildings. The current landlords, Barwood Investments, bought the site at the end of 2013 and sought to refurbish the buildings and the landscape. For the site security, the property letting agents, Savills turned to Clarion, an electronic security system installer. A new electronic system was sought, able to replace the costly manned guarding, as used historically. The site is constantly in use so the system needed to be flexible in its configuration, and always ‘on’.

Clarion deployed on the perimeter an access control system working with intrusion detection and CCTV running over IP. Some nine Optex Redscan laser sensors were fitted, scanning the activity on the perimeter line and inside the perimeter.

The laser sensors detect vehicles and people within a 30m radius and aren’t affected by light or weather the makers say. They were integrated by Clarion with the vehicle barrier and the IP based intercom, so that they don’t trigger when an authorised vehicle or person enters the site. The Redscans integrate with the video management software, Avigilon’s Contol Center, triggering dome cameras to go to pre-set positions to track any detected intruder and send an alarm to Farsight, the monitoring station looking after the site.

Chris Billinge, Managing Director at Clarion, says: “Our philosophy at Clarion is to provide a solution that offers flexibility to the customer and minimises unwanted alarms so the monitoring station can operate at its best. We chose OPTEX REDSCAN for this project for its flexibility and stability; it was easy to set up customised detection areas and to integrate the perimeter intrusion detection system (PIDS) with the rest of our security system. The system has proven very stable since the installation. Although Clarion has been working with OPTEX for many years, this is the first project we have deployed the REDSCANs and we are very satisfied by this intelligent sensor.”
