Handheld card reading

by Mark Rowe

CEM’s portable reader, the S3030 is a lightweight and rugged, handheld card reading device for use with the CEM AC2000 access control and security management system. Suitable the makers say for identity card validation at remote sites or temporary entrances which have no power, the S3030 can be used as a mobile device for random checks within pre-defined zones.

A large full colour TFT touch screen provides navigation and provides information about card validity, including cardholder details such as: cardholder photograph, name, job title, date of birth, card valid, card expired, card expiring, wrong time-zone, lost/stolen and not in system. The cardholder photograph display allows for visual verification of cardholders.

The S3030 can also be used for mustering situations and always contains the current system muster state. This provides a muster count which is decremented as people swipe their card at the safe area. Any remaining cardholders can be listed in a mini report on the portable screen.

An ‘Occupancy’ feature allows a card-holder head count to be performed in a defined area preventing card sharing. Occupancy provides the ability to do spot checks in a set of people in a defined area, such as a bus or plane.

The S3030f portable fingerprint reader is also available offering a fully integrated biometric product.
