Tour raises cash

by Mark Rowe

Five days in the cycling saddle has seen the security firm Securitas staff raise more than £3,000 for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

The company’s virtual ‘Tour of Securitas’ began in Edinburgh on September 8, and involved 800 officers and support staff across 21 branches, cycling on static bikes to help raise awareness of safety in the workplace and raise funds for the charity.

Finishing in Uxbridge five days later, the ‘Tour’ clocked up 2677 miles which included a personal challenge by Wakefield branch’s Ben Straker, who managed a solo 100 miles.

The Tour, sponsored by Marks and Spencer, Peter Drew Contracts Ltd and Boosters, coincided with the launch of Securitas’ Cycle to Work Campaign.

Securitas’ Chief Operating Officer, Shaun Kennedy, said: “Health benefits, as well as the economic and environmental rewards from commuting to work are well understood and, during the week, we saw 120 applications from staff members wanting to join the scheme. These applications represent a staggering £72,000 worth of bikes and cycle equipment which is a fantastic result.”

Members from the RoSPA team attended the Birmingham and Wellingborough events, taking a turn on the bike. RoSPA’s Head of Campaigns and Fundraising, Michael Corley, said: ‘It was great to see so many members of Securitas’ workforce have so much fun, while also fully engaging with the serious subject of accident prevention. I can’t tell you what it means to our cause, to receive such levels of moral and financial support – we even attracted the backing of Team GB cycling legend Shane Sutton!

“We need more partnerships like this, so that we can start tackling one of the UK’s biggest killers with a much more radical approach. I’m already looking forward to next year’s event, in the hope that we can raise even more life-saving funds for some of the most vulnerable members of our communities.'”

Shaun added: “A huge thank you to everyone who helped organise the Tour, got on a bike, baked a cake, dressed up, took part in the various games activities, or even had their legs waxed! We couldn’t have done it without you.

“We’re really grateful to our sponsors too. The T-shirts looked fabulous and the energy drinks and snacks really helped keep those legs pedalling. Plus our little ‘safety bugs’ will help continue to remind staff of the essential Tour message – putting safety first.”
