Hinkley Point FM contract

by Mark Rowe

A multi-million pound contract by EDF Energy to provide facilities management (FM) services at Hinkley Point C (HPC) in Somerset, has gone to the multi-national G4S. It’s due to be the first new nuclear power station built in Britain for a generation.

This follows the award to G4S in July 2015 of a ten-year contract to provide security services during the building of Hinkley Point C. G4S provides access control, perimeter security and visitor search and screening, besides vetting of on-site contractors.

G4S will now also provide FM services on this project, which will have 5,600 people on site daily at peak construction. G4S will provide a range of services at the main Hinkley Point C site and associated satellite locations over ten years. The UK Government signed contracts in September 2016 with a consortium led by EDF and including China General Nuclear (CGN), giving Hinkley Point C the go-ahead.

Facilities services will be provided across the site including at the power station itself and a warehouse being used as a holding depot for the building equipment and materials. G4S will also operate several park and ride sites as well as multiple temporary and permanent offices and training facilities. Over the life of the contract services will be added, including the management of a visitor centre which will welcome visitors during construction and once Hinkley Point C is operational. Services will include mechanical, electrical and building fabrication services, general building maintenance, cleaning, waste management, pest control, helpdesk and postal services.

The contract began in April 2017, with an 18 week transition period underway to embed all services. Anyone interested in joining the project workforce can register with the Hinkley Point C Jobs Service online.

G4S FM and Secure Solutions plan to take on offices in Bridgwater, the nearest town, for training staff and as a local recruitment hub. The centre will provide training space to conduct Enhanced Security Officer Courses (run by G4S Specialist Training), First Aid (FPOSi) training and Supervisor Training for the Security Contract, as well as cater to the training requirements for the FM.

G4S FM Director of Critical Infrastructure, Ian Ridgley, said: “This announcement builds on the long-standing relationship we have with EDF Energy at Hinkley Point C, providing advanced and integrated security for what will be the biggest building project in the UK. We are pleased to have been chosen to provide additional vital facilities management services to support the efficient running of the site.”
