DIY SOS project

by Mark Rowe

The BBC TV makeover show DIY SOS is turning an entire street in Manchester into a community for army veterans. The project, led by presenter Nick Knowles and his DIY SOS team, will bring empty houses back into use for former ex-servicemen and women and their families to live in.

Scores of firms and trades people, including VPS, the vacant property protection contractor, are to lend a hand. Nick Knowles with VPS Head of Social Housing Darren Marl are pictured.

Darren Marl, Head of VPS’ Social Housing sector, said: “In our day-to-day work we don’t just protect and secure empty properties, but we also have a team of specialists who helped quickly Clear and Clean the derelict properties and rear yards that had been left empty for years, preparing them for refurbishment and re-use as homes. We also engaged our grounds maintenance division, and they helped remove some old trees that were potential hazards.

“This amazing project will not only benefit former servicemen and women who deserve our support in return for what they’ve done for us, but it will also involve hundreds of people. That community spirit could impact on the area for years to come. It’s a privilege for our VPS team to be included.”

Military veterans are being sought who need a new home in the specially established community in Newton Heath and take part in BBC DIY SOS, due for screening later this year, and the BBC contact email is [email protected].

Also planned are a walk-in support centre, where the charity Walking With The Wounded will offer therapy, counselling, training and employment opportunities. Manchester City Council, Haig Housing and Adactus Housing are also helping with the project.
