Awards for officers

by Mark Rowe

Axis Security, the manned guarding and electronic security contractor, has again commended the work and efforts of its staff in the past year at its fifth annual National Security Awards Ceremony.

The event at the RAC Club in London saw awards were presented by John Fitzpatrick, London Operations Director, and Richard Jemson, National Operations Director. Awards were given in three categories – Team of the Year, Employee of the Year, and National Team of the Year. Nominees in each category had been put forward by their customers and the Axis Security account managers.

The Southbank Centre security team was named Team of the Year in recognition of its professionalism and standards of customer service, particularly during the Olympics when the site hosted the South African House. The team helped provide cover for 14,500 extra hours between April and September, which Head of Facilities Mark Foster described as ‘a remarkable achievement’. Officers responded to more than 3,000 first aid calls throughout the year including an attempted suicide on site.

Employee of the Year award went to Edmund Marquez, Security Supervisor for Woking Shopping, who has worked at the shopping centre in Woking, Surrey, for ten years. He was nominated by Martin Pooley, Operations Director at Woking Town Centre Management Ltd, who praised Edmund for his work in uniting two separate security teams, as well as dealing with a number of emergencies including a flash flood.

Finally, there were as ever many worthy nominations for the National Team of the Year award, including Chelmsley Wood Shopping Centre, Birmingham; The Sage Gateshead; Goodman sites in the North East and Leeds; Finzels Reach, Bristol; FG Wilson, Northern Ireland; Alliance Healthcare in Scotland and Newcastle; and the Topshop CCTV team at Oxford Circus, London. The winners were (pictured) the NHS Manchester and NHS Salford supervision team, who were described by Richard Jemson, National Operations Director, as having “consistently gone the extra mile to deliver customer care in difficult and pressurised situations.”

He adds: “All of the teams mentioned above have delivered above and beyond expectations, dealing with members of the public and senior managers within client businesses, assisting with large-scale site protests, patrolling and responding to emergency call-outs, as well as carrying out their normal daily tasks with enthusiasm, diligence and attention to detail.”

Jonathan Levine, CEO of Axis Group, praised all of the superb efforts witnessed across the company during 2012: “Yet again I am delighted to hear such positive feedback from our customers, reinforcing how proud I am of the exceptional work carried out by Axis Security officers around the country, and I am very grateful to all customers who were able to join us in making this event so special. It is a pleasure to have ended last year by recognising the highlights of 2012, and now we look ahead and hope to build on our strengths and successes even further in this new year,” he adds.
