Fire

Qualifications launch

by Mark Rowe

The Fire Industry Association announced on May 2 that it was launching four new formal qualifications in fire detection and alarm systems. These will be officially launched at FIREX, the annual show in London from June 20 to 22, with seminars and workshops.

The four new qualifications, which are provided through the new awarding organisation for the fire industry, the FIA AO, are designed to reflect the four main job roles of the sector – designer, installer, maintainer, and commissioner – with one qualification for each. Working with employers, recruiters, member organisations, and learners, the FIA says it developed the qualifications around the needs of each specific job role.

Three seminars will be presented by Martin Duggan, General Manager of the FIA, over the three days at FIREX. The talks, which will have an interactive feel and give the audience plenty of opportunity to ask questions, will give details about each qualification, the units studied, and the examination process. You’ll also be able to pick up a copy of the FIA’s new Professional Learning and Qualifications Prospectus.

The new qualifications, which have taken years of research, have been designed to give those working in the industry (or those just joining or wishing to join) a professional in-depth knowledge of their specialist field, and are a Level 3 on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), equivalent to an A-Level or NVQ Level 3.

There will be limited seats available at each seminar, so turn up early to get the best spot. Entrance to FIREX is free, and the seminars are open to all. To register, go to www.firex.co.uk – or for more about the new qualifications, go to www.fia.uk.com.
