LED emergency lighting range

by Mark Rowe

The manufacturer of life safety systems, Hochiki Europe, has extended its FIREscape LED emergency lighting range with FIREscape lite. These are mains-powered, stand-alone, self-contained emergency lighting products, without the need for a control panel governed lighting system.

Available as a range of 12 pre-packed, off-the-shelf kits, the product features a ‘step-down’ transformer, enabling the products to be mains powered, with either four types of luminaire or eight types of exit sign. The standalone lighting units can be placed anywhere within a building, as long as there is a mains lighting supply.

So that luminaires and exit signs continue to function in the event of a mains failure, the units have an integral battery which provides three hours of back-up power, in accordance with the recommendations of British Standard (BS) 5266. The battery is trickle-charged only when the internal diagnostics software senses a top up is required meaning the unit is always prepared for a mains power outage. The product also features a bi-coloured status LED on each unit to visually alert building managers to maintenance issues such as LED or battery faults.

Ian Watts, emergency lighting manager at Hochiki Europe, said: “Small developments tend to have relatively straightforward life safety needs, simply because they have a limited number of rooms, each with a restricted range of functions. This means they don’t need the kind of advanced emergency lighting systems used in larger premises. FIREscape lite is filling a gap in the market by providing owners of smaller properties or refurbishment projects with lighting technology capable of offering the best possible life safety system, without being unnecessarily complicated to install or operate. The systems’ reduced running cost also lowers energy consumption, while simultaneously lowering carbon emissions.”
