Block camera

by Mark Rowe

The Hitachi block camera DI-SC120R features a one-third inch CCD sensor which provides a 1280×720 high definition video stream. Hitachi has combined its proprietary Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to a high sensitivity CCD sensor and 30x lens to achieve a minimum subject illumination of 0.5lx in colour mode.

The product’s new features include de-fog; the camera processes in real time each pixel for fog thickness and applies contrast to the image to offer a much enhanced picture it is claimed. The 30x zoom function is combined with Hitachi’s auto focusing. This ensures the accurate capturing of important evidence in many applications, including urban surveillance, license plate capture, whether of distant vehicles, or trains. Electronic image stabilization compensates for vibration or movement of the camera, automatically minimizing image blur and providing clarity of the picture. Wide dynamic range allows the capture of image detail even in areas of contrast, indoors/outdoors scenes at the entrance of a building for example. These areas are prone to white-out or loss of dark detail, reducing clarity of the subject area. Hitachi report a two step approach to this problem. The first step uses a composite of images taken at two different shutter speeds, while the second employs a contrast offset that corrects the contrast for an image pixel by pixel basis. Other features include Privacy Masking in 3D mode in up to eight zones, 64 zone-motion detection, and motion tracking,.

The company says this block camera is suitable for PT domes and security and defence and other applications. The product is available from Cheshunt, Hertfordshire-based supplier Premier Electronics Ltd.
